CASTE SYSTEM-INDIA’S ENDURING CURSE

Caste System is a curse whose roots are indeed deep in Indian society which is being irrigated by the blood of innocents which bears the fruits of hatred, discrimination, discontentment, isolation and a disintegrated society.
Casteism propagated the concept of upper caste and lower caste.Earlier it was the work which used to define ones caste or Varna. But gradually the birth in a particular family used to define the caste.Honour killing, reservations are some prominent features of burgeoning casteism in India.
Killing of a Dalit boy for allegedly marrying a high caste girl in TamilNadu is really pathetic. The feeling of casteism became too strong and irresistible that it did not hesitate to take a precious life in the name of false honor.Every now and then we hear similar stories of honor killing.
This casteism is an endurable curse which has tried to limit love, feeling of oneness, gave birth to inferiority complex breeding discontentment and depression.
What morality and ethics may be taught to the children if parents of a Brahmin family propagate Brahminvaad and not letting their wards to touch the feet of those whose caste considered lower to them crushing all the aspects of good behavior and paying respect.
My brother is preparing for IIT in a coaching institute in Lucknow. He asked a Harijan boy who used to remain busy in his phone, to concentrate on studies as examination was soon approaching .His answer left him really astounded. He told that being an Sc i want only 100 to get a seat in NIIT.
The mindset due to cast based reservations has checked the real progress where merit is being compromised.Efficiency is put at stake..Nevertheless the seeds of segregation being sowed among the students just after 12th.
See how easily it sowed the seeds of animosity between friends. But real picture begins after getting admission in professional institutions where reserved category students have to cope up with increased burden of studies and manage. But generally they succumb to lose the race and seem disgusted and disappointed. In more extreme cases they resume to death. So who is to blame for this? Is this not casteism?.
But again the matters are politicized . The blame comes on faculty for neglecting a Dalit student.Political big wigs start playing their so called game of vote banks luring communities on parochial lines of caste, community.
Why the real cause is left unaddressed?.The benefits of reservation are not reaped by the ones who really need it.What a travesty?.Is this sort of reservation on caste lines not compromising with intellect, quality of work ?
How can a police officer belonging to a reserve category, securing less marks may ever catch a thief(general) who became one albeit securing more marks but could not get through the same competition?.This is what happening in India’s government jobs.
Delayed and imperfect work, corruption, even questions are raised on public service commissions of state to recruit the individuals on caste lines favored by the government.Even the head of education departments and important commissions were chosen on caste lines negating the eligibility criteria and other norms showing so much descrepancy in their work culture.
Our leaders are misguided by caste based politics. On the other side we talk of inclusive development. How is it possible till the society is segregated by ill concepts of caste, creed ,religion?
Casteism has left deep scars on Indian society which is equally painful. This is a social stigma which deprives one to follow his true conscience. We must learn from the history where Shri Ram eaten the berries tasted by a lower caste woman Shabri.Once Satyavaadi Harish Chandra worked under a lower caste man .
So caste is only superficial no religion is bigger than humanity, love, compassion. It is really unfortunate to seek political patronage over caste. Our social reformers have done enough but now we have to open our eye of conscience to deal with ravages of casteism.Political leaders by abdicating shallow caste based politics and becoming torch bearers of society.Letting others feel empowered is heavenly. Why to confine and restrict definition of progress. Schemes like mid day meal is admirable but a change in the mindset of people by the combined efforts of civil society, government and citizens may work wonders to eradicate this so called caste evil. Lets taste the fruits of a true egalitarian society and experience its beauty.

  1. Good Morning Jaya πŸ™‚
    My views-
    1. Your essay had flow but, connectivity was missing.
    2. Intro was okay, but it was a single long sentence. Difficult to comprehend. Also, its a short sentences for intro. So what u can do is, start with it and in the next para, try to go into some depth.
    3. from the next para, u went back to history, then honor killing, fir lack of unity, then moral issue- thoda continuity missing hai.
    4. Then, a major part u devoted to education problem- I mean reservation thing. Wo weightage zyada ho gai.
    5. “How can a police officer belonging to a reserve category, securing less marks may ever catch a thief(general) who became one albeit securing more marks but could not get through the same competition? This is what happening in India’s government jobs.”- This sentence isn’t clear + I would suggest you not to put this arguement because it is giving the message as if marks define person’s ability and it is not so always.
    6. 2nd last para was good.
    7. Conclusion was okay.
So, since the topic said ‘enduring curse’ hence we need to define how is it so since time immemorial. Also, as read Nitish’s comment on my essay. He provided some excellent issues to put through. Basically there is so much to write here. hence we need to plan a bit.
Keep writing and inspiring. ATB πŸ™‚

  2. Hello Jaya!
    1)Intro is fine.
    2) Shuru me hi aapne 2nd para k saath Dalit boy ko connect ka dia! jamma nhi wha par! phle aapko enough content+flow maintain karna chahie tha.
    3) He told that being an Sc i want only 100 to get a seat in NIT. I know what u want to convey but the essay demands something else (curse). Yha aap to SCs ko blame de rhe thoda(-ve impression jaara ki main baat se hatke kahi aur pahunch gye(a direct attack on reservation ekdum se hi)
    4) How can a police officer belonging to a reserve category, securing less marks may ever catch a thief(general)
Please ye wala portion remove kar do! Not justified! πŸ™‚
    5) Conclusion is nice with a +ve finish. beech me there is connectivity problem! aapne shuru me dalit wala example, fir beech me police wala, fir SC NIT wala example dia but us se phle enough substance nhi dia, bus random beech me material daala, and then connectivity was lost! what ur essay conveyed throughout was good( police wala example chod k), but not in proper style. πŸ™‚
Regarding aapne jo mera review kia tha, mene historic background+pre-independent era+ modern society, is way me connect karne ki try ki thi. Although i missed to critically analyse! but aapke pass acha substance tha but not properly arranged.
i hope review zyada hash na hua ho. πŸ™‚
Overall theek tha, but always can improve!
    Keep writing Jaya πŸ™‚

  3. hello Jaya :
    My delayed review:-
The first thing which is missing is that the demand of the word β€œenduring curse” is only partially fulfilled. Since enduring means longlasting, we are supposed to mention the historical phase and the curse nature of caste system. That is from vedic time to present world,
Beginning is too general, not catchy enough to attract the reader attention.
Order is missing. U have mixed examples of past and present together.
Harijan waala example is fine, but plz don’t reveal personal informations like —My brother is preparing for IIT in a coaching institute in Lucknow—–
U have posed several questions without providing their answer. Our fellow insightians suggested me to reduce the number of questions when I wrote three questions in my conclusion, they said it was irritating to read such unanswered questions, now I got why reading unanswered questions is irritating. My suggestion is if u are posing questions, then, it is good to catch the attention of the reader but also provide the answers . And do not put too many question together, like u did here–Why the real cause is left unaddressed?.The benefits of reservation are not reaped by the ones who really need it.What a travesty?.Is this sort of reservation on caste lines not compromising with intellect, quality of work ?—-and did not write their answers. If u have planned to answers ,then , mention that we will try to find answer to these questions in this essay. In silos they appear non-appealing.
How can a police officer belonging to a reserve category, securing less marks may ever catch a thief(general) who became one albeit securing more marks but could not get through the same competition?—this example is not apt as this shows that one who gets more marks will always be better policeman, this is not correct. Could have used a different example to show the inefficacy of reservation.
We must learn from the history where Shri Ram eaten the berries tasted by a lower caste woman Shabri—*mythology *–I think a real example would be better, I have seen people not liking mythology stuff , examiner could also be one of them.
U have highlighted the issue of reservation too much, but did not provide sufficient solutions to the problems that u have mentioned.
Planning is missing in arranging the ideas,
There is issue of sentence formulation like– Political leaders by abdicating shallow caste based politics and becoming torch bearers of society—this is not a complete sentence and confusing me.
Concrete solutions are missing. These should precede the conclusion
Conclusion needs improvement, mention of new examples like MDM in conclusion could have been avoided.
Overall, not a Jaya kinda essay,
P.S: aaj kuch zyada hi criticise kar diya toh kuchh purane shabd likhna padenge–> pardon me if I sounded harsh πŸ˜›
    Om shanti πŸ™‚
